Abstract

Vision statements, a crucial component of strategic planning that guides institutional change, are considered important for university libraries in terms of outlining their future orientation. However, the themes around which these vision statements are shaped, the components they contain, and the extent of similarities or differences among university libraries are not sufficiently known. This situation highlights the importance of analyzing the vision statements of university libraries. The aim of this study is to examine the vision statements found on the websites of university libraries in Türkiye using content and thematic analysis methods, and to identify the prominent main themes and sub-elements. Furthermore, the study aims to reveal the similarities, differences, and shortcomings between these themes and components; to analyze the frequency levels of the concepts and vision elements used; and to evaluate these components according to the type of university (state/foundation). This study was conducted using a qualitative research design based on document analysis. The population of the study consists of 205 university libraries operating in Türkiye as of 2025; the sample consists of 168 university libraries (120 state, 48 foundation) that have a vision statement accessible online on their websites. When the findings are evaluated in general, a significant difference in approach is observed between state and private universities. While the vast majority of state university libraries (95.2%) include vision statements on their websites, this rate is lower in private university libraries (61.5%). Content analysis of the vision statements reveals that university libraries largely position themselves around access to information, digitalization, and user-oriented services. Furthermore, significant differences in vision statements were found depending on the type of university (state/private). The concepts of “modernity” (89), “internationalization” (80), and “research” (53) are represented with the highest frequency in the vision statements; this indicates that libraries are positioned as a strategic stakeholder in terms of the university’s academic reputation and research quality. It is believed that the study results will provide a strategic perspective to the vision development processes of university libraries and offer guiding contributions to decision-makers. In this context, the fact that university libraries are not merely “sources of information” but also spaces for social interaction and learning should be reflected in their vision statements, within the framework of spatial richness and infrastructure diversity. Furthermore, it can be stated that the vision statements of university libraries should be updated regularly and that these statements should be structured in a way that is strategically deep, participatory, dynamic, and sustainable.
