Abstract

In terms of fast and accurate access to information, it is important to identify those responsible for the mental formation of the resource (writer, director, painter, etc.) and to save the basic input item in a standard way. Authority directories should be prepared for the control, uniformity and bibliographic standard of the library collection. Authority directories make it easier to share the library collection effectively and accurately with the user, as well as providing national and international standardization.

The fact that author names are preferred as a scanning option in accessing information reveals the necessity of author authority directories. Author authority directories are seen as an imperative to check the library collection. Accordingly, in our study, the necessity of author authority directories, its importance in terms of bibliographic control and the problems encountered during the creation of an authority directory are discussed.

Our study focused on how to create author authority records based on international author authority directory projects, Library of Congress and RDA. In addition, the authority records of Turkish authors on VIAF were compared with the records of Ankara University Library, author consistency and errors were determined. In addition, it was emphasized which rules and principles should be taken into consideration while preparing an author authority directory. As a result of the research, suggestions were made in order to prepare author authority directories and to expand usage.
