Abstract

The main aim of this study is to indicate the basic requirements for information protessionals to become information literates on the Web, in accordance with the tundamental standards of information literacy. Considering that there are and will be an increasing number and variety of library and information organizations (e.g., electronic, digital, and virtual libraries) in the rapidly changing and developing area of information, and particularly on the internet, information professionals, who are responsible tor meeting the Web users' intormation requirements, will be able to perform relevant activities including planning and management of Website content and design, with competence, accuracy and reliability only it they are properly acquainted with and capable of fulfilling the requirements of information literacy on the Web. The abovementioned requirements. which are formulated in the basic literacy standards developed by the Association of Gollege and Research Libraries tor higher education, are considered in this study as the basic prerequisites tor information professionals to become information literates on the Web.
