Abstract

In this article, following a general evaluation of the modern level of understanding attained in the world and particularly in the more advanced countries of the northern hemisphere regarding information science and technology, current trends in this area has been analysed. Particular reference is made to the EU Sixth Framework Programme’s “Information Society Technologies” thematic area and the expectations of this programme, of which Turkey is a full member, has been summarised. Subsequently a general evaluation has been made of the activities so far undertaken in information technologies and policies thereof in Turkey and specially, the outcomes of the TUENA report summarised. Finally, a lengthy discussion of the nature of the policy that should be adopted and implemented with regards information activities in Turkey has been presented.
