Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to examine the relationship and the interaction between the concept of social capital and the library institution. Within this framework, international literature on the concept of social capital in the field of the Sociology and the Information Science was used to get information. The concept of social capital was discussed with regard to its definition, types, components, functions, importance and methods of measurement. It was found out that social capital which is a inclusive phenomenon of social sciences is a concept that includes the library institutions. Evaluation of the library institution within the scope of social capital leads to a new theoretic approach about information science area. Social capital is included in features such as networks, trust and norms which enable social life to act together in accordance with a common goal. Moreover, it is compatible with being a part of a social group trustfully along with some rules and networks. The connection between the concept of social capital and library institution revolves around fulfilling information needs of individuals, strengthening the position of that individuals in the society, sharing reliable information, creating a collective memory, affecting the individual’s social and moral behaviors positively. It also enables social and voluntary activities. Libraries are important elements in determining social reputation, identification, culture, social relation and interaction zone belonging to the members of the public. Thereby turning into formal and widespread communication centers, libraries make the communication between childrenparents and among the family stronger. Furthermore, the libraries having the function of cultural incorporation may open a road to become integrated with broader communities by building networks at the social level, or by providing involvement into the available networks. Library administrators should develop programs and policies on this additional role.
